The staff at Kansas Grassroots have over 20 years of winning grassroots campaign experience. Here is a sample of our recent work.

Yes on 2 Campaign

During the 2009 legislative session, members of the Kansas Mental Health Coalition were concerned about the presence of discriminatory and outdated language in the Kansas Constitution that could be used to limit a person’s right to vote based upon their mental health diagnosis. A bill passed in the Kansas Legislature that placed this issue on the November 2nd, 2010 general election ballot for public approval. Initial polling revealed that the public was largely unaware of this constitutional provision and only 54% of the public approved the amendment to remove it.

Kansas Grassroots Consulting was brought on to direct the campaign and ensure passage of the amendment. By utilizing our in-house expertise we were able to mount an aggressive public education campaign that included over 300,000 targeted mail pieces to undecided voters and over 160 endorsements from Kansas organizations, elected officials, and candidates for public office. The entire campaign was completed under budget and ultimately secured 64% of the public vote, amending the constitution and protecting the voting rights of Kansans.

Clean Air Kansas

Clean Air Kansas campaign

Kansas Grassroots Consulting directed a successful statewide grassroots effort to establish a statewide smoking ban in Kansas. In a few months we were able to recruit a robust network of thousands of supporters across the state who mobilized to produce a tidal wave of constituent contact, resulting in the ultimate passage of historic public health legislation. During the campaign we developed some innovative technology that was recognized with a Pollie award by the American Association of Political Consultants for the “Best Use of New Technology”.

Raise the Wage, Kansas!

Raise the Wage Kansas was a coalition of faith, labor, social service, and community organizations united behind the establishment of fair and just wages for Kansas Workers, united around the goal of raising the Kansas minimum wage from $2.65 to $7.25 per hour. Kansas Grassroots helped lead coalition building efforts and recruited a large grassroots base in support of better wages and overall economic justice. The overwhelming public support generated for this effort effectively persuaded a significant number of previously opposed lawmakers to vote for the minimum wage increase, the first increase in Kansas in over 20 years! The Topeka-Capitol Journal credited the Raise the Wage, Kansas efforts as an early example of the power of social media websites to encourage activism.
